What is global warming?

‘Global warming’ isn’t a new concept by any means, and it’s not the first time our planet has seen a peak in temperatures. Earth is pretty old, and over the last 100 million years it has been fluctuating. So, if global warming is normal why should we be concerned and what happened the last time it heated? Well, you probably know more about the last global warming than you might think. Ever heard of dinosaurs? How about the cretaceous period? Scientists believe that roughly 92 million years ago during the cretaceous our planet was at its hottest. In fact, it was so warm that Champsosaurs (crocodile like dinsoaurs) were found in the Canadian arctic! So now that we know that global warming is nothing new, let's find out how today’s global warming affects us, and what we can do to help cool things down.

Understanding the science

First things first, let's explain in simple terms exactly what global warming is. The clue is in the name; global warming is the long-term increase in the earth’s surface temperature that occurs when CO2 builds in the atmosphere. Over the last 100 years our planet’s temperature has increased by roughly 0.08° Celsius and is expected to warm by 1.5° Celsius by 2050. That may not sound like a lot but as we like to say at Earth Nerd, small changes can have big effects. Already we are seeing those effects on our climate through changes in rainfall, sea levels, and droughts. Though climate change doesn’t just mean our planet is getting warmer, it means we are likely to see extreme severe storms and the loss of many wild species.

Sounds scary doesn’t it, but the battle isn’t lost yet. There are many things you can do to help, and we are going to tell you how.

Let's transition from understanding to action. The beauty of addressing global warming is that everyone, regardless of their background or resources, can contribute in meaningful ways. Here's how you can make a difference, one small step at a time:

Know your footprint?

Do you know your shoe size? Of course you do, but do you know the size of your carbon footprint? Understanding your carbon impact on the world will help you to make decisions on how to reduce it. From downsizing your energy consumptions, responsible recycling, and mindful eating there are many ways to shrink your household carbon output.

Consume Consciously

Good food is one of life’s great joys. Your food should make you feel good, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be good for our planet too. Your diet choices play a role in your carbon output, so where you can try to eat responsibly. Aim to reduce meat consumption and find some yummy alternatives. Meat production makes up around 60% of greenhouse gasses, that works out to roughly 0.7 tonnes of CO2 produced annually per meat eating person. That’s a whole lot of greenhouse gas! Now we aren’t suggesting you go cold turkey but consider incorporating more plant-based meals with local veggies into your diet. Not only will it be good for the planet, but it can be a great way of boosting a healthy diet.

Renewable Energy

It is a little ironic that a global warming was present in the time of dinosaurs, especially since  the burning of fossil fuels is a leading cause of today’s global temperature increase. It’s like the ghosts of global warming’s past are coming back for round two. Luckily, we don’t need to call any ghost busters, just install some solar panels! Solar energy is a great way of lowering your long-term energy bill whilst giving your home that green boost. Though, if solar power isn’t on the cards for you, consider writing to your local MP’s. A well written letter can go a long way and can pressure your local governors to push for greener climate change solutions.

Advocacy and Awareness

Raise your voice! Engaging in discussions about climate change, sharing information, and supporting businesses that promote sustainability is a great way to inspire others. Lead by example and share your amazing climate progress!

Remember, overcoming global warming is not a solo mission; it's a collective endeavour that involves governments, industries, and individuals like you!

Every action you take, no matter how small, contributes to the larger tapestry of change. So, let's embrace our roles as everyday heroes, armed with reusable bags, energy-efficient habits, and an idea of the change we want to see 🌱🌏
